About the Job


This is a senior level Database Administrator (DBA) position with management experience. This position ensures that database design and coding standards are adhered to. Designs and implements new database environments and database objects as required by development teams. This role calls for an individual who can demonstrate analytical, documentation, and communication skills in addition to understanding database technology. Research new platform architectures to support business requirements and assist with complex query development and tuning. The position will assist with data mining and data warehousing, working with data analysts. The individual should be able to easily communicate with teams of non-technical business stakeholders and highly technical internal IT resources. This individual is usually managed by the IT Director




Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Manage a team of 4-5 data analysts

  • Maintain database availability during operating windows

  • Install, configure, and administer databases in a multiple database server, high availability environments

  • Configuration of database clustering and mirroring

  • Maintain data integrity and archive data

  • Design, automate and document backup, archival, and cleanup tasks

  • Prepare and maintain documentation on all database installations and configurations

  • Install, configure and administer databases in all environments including load/hardware analysis mapping, fault tolerance, and security

  • Tune and optimize existing databases

  • Ensure appropriate hardware resources are allocated to databases

  • Proactively monitor the database systems to ensure secure services with minimum downtime

  • Provide trend analysis to make informed decisions regarding resource management

  • Troubleshoot SQL development problems

  • Responsible for improvement and maintenance of the databases to include rollout and upgrades


  • Implement and release database changes according to agreed timetables



Required Qualifications


  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent work experience required

  • 3 to 5 or years demonstrable SQL Server DBA experience

  • 2 to 4 years of management experience

  • Experience with MS SQL Server through current release

  • T-SQL scripting

  • SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS/DTS)

  • SQL Server Reporting Services and Analysis Services

  • Open Database Connectivity (ODBC).

  • Familiarity with backup/recovery strategies, distributed databases, data migration, security, and SQL error handling.

  • Schema design and tuning experience – designing tables, views, indexes

  • Ability to work well with technical and business teams

  • Ability to prioritize and organize time to follow through with assigned functions while maintaining a high standard of quality, and to deal with multiple overlapping projects

  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to compile, interpret, and utilize information; and to communicate effectively with people of all backgrounds and educational levels

  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision, use good judgment, meet deadlines, and prioritize workloads

  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality

  • Must be well organized and have good attention to detail

  • Must be able to maintain professionalism and appropriate boundaries in all interactions

  • Must have excellent computer skills



  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent work experience.

  • Must have a valid Washington Driver’s License and maintain automobile insurance

  • TB tested annually




  • Bachelors or Master’s Degree in Computer Science, or related discipline.

  • MCDBA, MCITP database certification.
