How long does the volunteer application process take?
Plan on 3-5 weeks passing between when you submit your application and when you begin volunteering. To speed up the process as much as possible, submit your required paperwork promptly.
How many hours a week can I volunteer, and is there a minimum requirement?
With any job or volunteer site, it takes time to learn about the position and feel comfortable working there. We ask that volunteers commit to 4 hours of service per week for at least 3 months; this will allow both the volunteer and placement site to best benefit from the volunteer's time at Sea Mar. Positions can be started any time during the year, and we will try to work with your schedule as much as possible. Some positions require a 6-month commitment.
Can I still volunteer if I have a positive TB/PPD test?
Yes. Please contact the Volunteer Program for more information.
What about Service Learning students?
All of the Service Learning students must complete all their paperwork by the end of the 4th week of the quarter in order to volunteer.
Do I need to speak Spanish? I've only had two or three classes in school, or don't know the language at all.
While some of our positions require Spanish fluency, there are many opportunities at Sea Mar for those with little or moderate Spanish proficiency.
What about volunteering evenings or weekends?
Most of our volunteer positions are Monday through Friday, 8am-5pm; however, some sites are open on Saturdays.
