Volunteer Position Descriptions
POSITIONS LOCATED IN SEA MAR COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTERS
Pediatric Literacy Coordinator, Seattle
Based out of Seattle, Member will coordinate Reach Out and Read, a pediatric literacy program, where providers use the well-child check to encourage early reading and to stimulate children’s development. Providers give the gift of one book, and by the start of school, children ideally have their own small library. Position includes training providers, coordinating volunteer readers for the waiting room, re-ordering books, seeking book donations, and grant writing. Member will also oversee extension initiatives to northern and southern clinics.
Child Development Center (CDC), Seattle: Health Education: Nutrition
Seeking applicant who loves to be with children (2 months to 5 years) and is creative. Member will create fun, age appropriate health focused activities / curriculum (gardening, cooking, exercise) and facilitate classes with children in the morning and afternoon programs at the CDC. Member will also help coordinate the Intergenerational Program, which encourages meaningful interaction between Nursing Home residents and children based on traditional Latino, family-centered model. Language Requirement: some Spanish speaking ability preferred.
Maternity Support Services, Seattle: Doula Labor Support
Member will train as a Birthing Doula with Seattle Midwifery School. Member will then serve as part of Seattle’s MSS Department providing pre and post labor education as well as labor support to clients who lack a support system. This position requires independence, sensitivity, a willingness to work independently, and the ability to handle a demanding on-call schedule. Health Education, Seattle
Members will participate in health education-related initiatives (subject to change as grants change).
- Diabetes Education and Outreach: Members will assist with diabetes outreach and education for Latino community. The diabetes program functions within the REACH model (Racial & Ethnic Approaches to Community Health), and provides education and resources to the Latino community. The member will coordinate monthly Diabetes Days, which provide foot and eye exams to patients. Language Requirement: Bilingual Spanish/English required.
- Life Skills Training: Members will do health education work in the public schools (elementary and middle school). The focus is on building self-esteem, alcohol and drug use prevention, communication skills, media awareness, anger and stress management.
- Tobacco Education: Member will assist Sea Mar Health Educator in tobacco education initiatives for adult populations including facilitating information sessions at the Mexican Consulate, facilitating support groups in Spanish and English and conducting cessation counseling sessions by phone. Language Requirement: Bilingual Spanish/English required.
All SEA MAR, Seattle: Volunteer Program Coordinator
Member will coordinate a volunteer program within SEA MAR involving outreach and recruitment in various communities. Member will interview, make placements, oversee volunteer contracts, maintain sites, do volunteer appreciation, organize agency wide volunteer projects and seek to expand the program. This position works well for someone interested in seeing big picture agency needs and learning about community networking.
Language Requirement: Spanish speaking ability preferred but not required.
In-Patient Substance Abuse Treatment Facility, Seattle: Arts Empowerment Educator
Member will facilitate and continue enhancing an already successful Arts Empowerment and Health Education program designed to complement youth treatment plan. Youth gardening project is a new component of this placement as well. Prior Gardening experience desired but not required. Member should have experience or strong interest with the arts as a tool for empowerment and/or healing and in working with youth aged 14-20.
Care Center / Nursing Home, Seattle: Intergenerational Program Coordinator
Member will serve in Nursing Home and Alzheimer’s Unit. Will facilitate the Activities resident activities (intended to stimulate, maintain, and heal) including coordinating Intergenerational Program, which encourages meaningful interaction between children of Child Development Center and Nursing Home residents, based on traditional Latino, family-centered model. Member should be creative and interested in working with elders, residents and children. Language Requirement: Spanish language ability preferred but not required.
POSITIONS LOCATED AT SEA MAR AND PARTNER SITES: Patient Navigators
Patient Navigators: Seattle, Burien, Tacoma, Olympia, Vancouver and ICHS
Members will work with providers and other clinic staff to assist patients to access appropriate care, minimize no-shows, assure pre and post visit needs are met, facilitate brief education encounters related to chronic conditions, medically complicated cases and for patients with multiple barriers to care within the medical clinic setting. Provide translation/interpretation and coordinate charity drug program assistance. Patient Navigator position duties may vary as each position is customized to meet the specific needs of the host clinic.

- Sea Mar Community Health Centers specializes in service to the medically underserved Latino community. Language Requirement: Bilingual Spanish/English required.
- ***Bilingual Russian / English desired for Vancouver site.
- International Community Health Services specializes in service to medically underserved Asian immigrant communities; offers a Chinese Traditional Medicine Clinic. Language Requirement: Asian language specialties including Vietnamese, Cantonese or Mandarin required.
