Service Projects

Fiestas Patrias, held annually in September, is a celebration of Mexican Independence. Other Latin American countries also celebrate their independence around this time. Sea Mar Fiestas Patrias began in 1994 in conjunction with the grand opening of Sea Mar Community Care Center, the nursing home. Fiestas is a multi-day celebration of Mexican and Latin American heritage reinforcing cultural pride and sharing cultural traditions with other communities.
In September, the Seattle Community HealthCorps members, along with Sea Mar staff and patients enjoy a parade through the South Park Neighborhood. The parade is followed by a larger celebration at the Seattle Center which includes: folkloric dancers, mariachi and other bands, crafts, food, clowns, games and health services and information. The HealthCorps team participates in the parade as well as many of the health-related activities that take place at the Seattle Center.
Community Service Projects
This year’s Seattle Community HealthCorps members performed monthly community service projects in various places within Sea Mar Community Health Centers and within the local community. Our members participate in trainings and service opportunities with various local non-profit organizations each year including: Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition,
Marra Farm, Just Health Action, Providence Regina House Food Bank and the Danny Woo Garden - International District and in collaboration with local communities as well as other AmeriCorps programs including City Year and Growing Roots AmeriCorps.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service
Every year Sea Mar HealthCorps members, along with thousands of Americans, celebrate and honor the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by serving in their communities.
MLK Day is "a day ON, not a day off."
One of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s life goals was to forge the common ground on which people from all walks of life could join together as equals to address important community issues. He realized that service was the great equalizer. Thus, he once said, "Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve."
Past MLK Day projects include sorting clothing and other items with the Lifelong Aids Alliance, Partnering with City Year to create a mural with youth in a residential drug and alcohol treatment center, teaming up with the local community to do a graffiti paint-out and neighborhood clean-up project and collaborating with a local food bank on a food drive.
