Our patients are the hard-working people of Western Washington, the freedom-loving immigrants of the western migrant stream, and the peace-loving refugees of the world’s most troubled nations. The Great Recession of 2007-2009 caused a historic loss of wealth, employment and social services for the working and middle class of this country. Our clinic, one of the largest Community Health Centers (CHC) in the country, saw our state-sponsored funding drastically cut with a simultaneous increase in desperate uninsured patients coming to us for care. Our patients rely on their bodies to pay the bills, and when they break down, their families go hungry. This exacerbation of suffering and poor access to specialty medical care led to the expansion of a great experiment: specialty medical services under a primary care CHC roof, beginning with musculoskeletal services (MSK).
Seven years later, Sea Mar built a state-of-the-art multidisciplinary MSK clinic in the White Center neighborhood of Seattle where we care for patients of all ages, sports and orthopedic conditions. We save our patients, our partners and our payers time, money and energy from unnecessary referrals and MRI orders, and most importantly we keep our patients at work and play. The Sports Medicine Department is a trusted member of the community.
Fast forward to the COVID pandemic of 2020-2023. We were once again tested to keep our essential working population running the state, feeding our cities, competing in the sports they love while guarding against mass spreader events. Our staff play all sides of the ball: primary care, urgent care, mass testing, public health, hospital care and sports medicine. The work was intense and we proved our worth to the community again. That is Sea Mar Community Health/Sports Medicine: Trusted. Tested. Proven.
Since the end of the pandemic, our country has lost many healthcare providers and essential workers. We continue to train Nurse Practice and Family Medicine residents from 3 different programs while expanding MSK services to counties of Western Washington. Demand has never been greater for team members, so we decided in 2023, to develop our own Community Health/Sports Medicine Fellowship to fill the service gap for our medically underserved communities with proposed go-live date TBD.
